The city of Kuopio has committed to joining an anti-racism campaign as one of the first municipalities. The city announced its participation in the Finnish government’s “We Speak With Actions” campaign, which will run until the end of the current government term. The aim is to promote diversity and equality.

During the campaign, Kuopio plans to focus on three key initiatives. The city will implement safer space principles, actively offer internships for youth from ethnic minorities, and update the city council’s declaration on equality and equity.

According to Kuopio’s press release, the city is taking various actions to advance equality and inclusivity. For example, training has been provided for staff, and anonymous recruitment practices are already in place. The anti-racism campaign is linked to a report submitted to Parliament last fall regarding actions against racism. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo introduced the campaign on Tuesday.

The campaign encourages organizations, communities, institutions, and businesses to take concrete steps towards building an equal and racism-free Finland. A dedicated website has been created for the initiative. Currently, Helsinki, along with Kuopio, has also joined the campaign.
