Students develop innovative tool for Norwegian Tax Administration to streamline tax crime tips
Students have developed a new tool for the Norwegian Tax Administration aimed at streamlining the handling of tax crime tips. Utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning, this innovative solution automates the process, enhancing workflow efficiency. The new system is more structured and allows for attachments, facilitating better automated reviews.
This marks the first instance where the Tax Administration has engaged students to form an interdisciplinary team. According to the agency, the project has been a success, providing valuable insights into the challenges they face. The new solution has the potential to save significant time in the future.
Thor Fransplass, a student at NTNU, is among those who worked on this project. He and six other students from various academic backgrounds collaborated at the Tax Administration’s Bodø office to develop a simpler method for processing thousands of annual tax crime reports, primarily submitted through an online portal.
Currently, the review of these tips is done manually. However, with advancements in AI and machine learning, the students have improved the workflow considerably.
Marie Mariussen, also a student at NTNU, noted the unique opportunity this project presented, emphasizing the importance of sorting, structuring, verifying, and classifying tips through automated processes, allowing staff to focus on tasks requiring human intervention.
Marcus Samuelsen, a department head, expressed satisfaction with the decision to involve students, believing it could lead to significant time savings. The initiative has allowed the agency to gain fresh perspectives and explore innovative solutions to existing challenges.
This year marks the first time the Bodø office has invited students to participate, and the interdisciplinary collaboration is seen as a tremendous success, contributing not only to problem-solving but also promoting the region as an attractive place for future employment opportunities.
