Residents of Árneshreppur to discuss potential municipal merger options in Trékyllisvík

Residents of Árneshreppur will discuss the potential for merging with other municipalities during a public meeting scheduled for tomorrow. Currently, Árneshreppur has a population of just 53, significantly below the minimum requirement of 1,000 residents mandated by local government regulations.

“The first step is to invite the residents to discuss this matter back and forth,” said Skúli Gautason, acting mayor of Árneshreppur. He emphasized the importance of hearing the residents’ thoughts on possible mergers and determining if there is any interest in joining another municipality.

The meeting will take place at the community center in Trékyllisvík, and the local council intends to move forward based on the residents’ feedback. While the government does not enforce mergers, Gautason pointed out the benefits of larger populations, such as improved administrative efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and enhanced services.

Kaldrananeshreppur, located nearby, is considered a potential candidate for merger, although it only has about double the population of Árneshreppur, resulting in a combined total of 160 residents—still under the required threshold. Other options for merger include Strandabyggð, which is slightly larger, or even Súðavíkurhreppur and Ísafjarðarbær to the west.

Geographical boundaries do not necessarily pose a barrier to merging. “One could also consider merging with Garðabær, if we think outside the box,” Gautason noted, suggesting that broader discussions about potential partnerships could yield innovative solutions for the small municipality.
