Finnish Air Force hosts NATO training event featuring F-35 fighters from Finland, Norway, and the United States

This week, the Finnish Air Force is hosting a training event involving fighter jets from Finland, Norway, and the United States. The exercise focuses on enhancing the interoperability of NATO allies’ F-35 fighters with Army and Navy weapon systems. The event will run from Monday to Thursday and will include Finnish F/A-18 Hornet jets alongside two American and two Norwegian F-35A Lightning II fighters, as well as Army and Navy assets.

The U.S. and Norwegian F-35s will operate from the Pirkkala base, located in the Satakunta region, with flight operations directed toward training areas in Central Finland and the Gulf of Finland. Colonel Tommi Heikkala, head of operations for the Air Force, stated that the F-35s significantly enhance Finland’s defense capabilities for the future.

“The fighter’s radar and other sensors enable effective support for ground and naval operations from the air,” Heikkala noted, emphasizing the close cooperation with other branches of defense and NATO allies within the F-35 program.

The training event aims to validate the allies’ F-35 ground target designation capabilities for the firepower of Army and Navy systems. Additionally, Finnish F/A-18 Hornets will conduct Fighter Integration (FI) sorties alongside U.S. and Norwegian F-35s, aiming to develop interoperability between fourth and fifth-generation fighters. The FI initiative seeks to optimize the performance of both fighter types, leveraging their respective strengths.
