Damaged pipeline reaches shore but will remain in place

The NSL-4 civil protection pipeline reached shore in Vestmannaeyjar at around 6 a.m. on Saturday, but no further work will be carried out while an insurance company investigates damage sustained last weekend, mbl.is reports.

It is not yet known whether the pipeline can be repaired and used or whether a new one will have to be laid, according to Eyþór Sigurðsson, the project manager.

The pipeline will be pressure-tested once the insurance investigation is complete. That test cannot be carried out beforehand because it could affect the damage and interfere with the investigation.

The timing of the investigation’s conclusion remains unclear and is in the hands of the insurance company. The pipeline will not be connected to the system until the investigation has been completed and the insurer has approved further work.

The ends of the pipeline have been securely closed at both shores. All necessary documents will be provided for the investigation, and the work will continue in close cooperation with the pipeline’s manufacturer.
