Progress made in underwater searches in Oulu’s Holliha district
Police have made progress in underwater searches conducted in Oulu’s Holliha district. According to the lead investigator, interesting findings were made in the sea over the weekend, although Crime Commissioner Ilkka Riikola has not disclosed the specifics of these discoveries. He mentioned, however, that they have proven beneficial to the police investigation.
In addition to noteworthy items, a significant amount of debris was also retrieved from the seabed, including knives, bottle caps, and metal scraps, as Riikola noted. The underwater searches have been supported by the Defence Forces and have been ongoing for several days. Efforts will continue for at least a few more days, with plans to expand the search area near the Holliha boat harbor.
The police hope to uncover items related to a homicide that occurred in Kuivasjärvi, Oulu, in June. Details about what is specifically being searched for remain undisclosed, but according to Riikola, it pertains to “tools” associated with the crime. Prior to the diving operations, authorities sought public assistance in locating missing blue bulletproof vests connected to the case, although it has not been confirmed whether they are being searched for in the sea.
The homicide is suspected to have taken place in the outdoor area of Kuivasjärvi between Friday and Saturday during the transition from May to June. A young man in his twenties was shot and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
One suspect, also in his twenties, is currently in detention, while police are also investigating three other youths for lesser offenses related to the incident.
