Hafnarfjörður expects to reach an outcome on a compensation claim linked to Tækniskólinn before the end of the year, town council chair Orri Björnsson told mbl.is. He said the town does not view the matter as a mistake or failure on its part.
“We are in discussions with them to bring the matter to a close. It is about reaching an agreement with Skólastræti,” Orri said. He hopes there will be news within two or three weeks.
Skólastræti Tækniskólans ehf., a company established in 2024 to build and operate Tækniskólinn’s properties, recently filed a compensation claim against the town after plans to build a new school at Flensborgarhöfn fell through. The company was established under an agreement involving the state, Hafnarfjörður and the school.
Tækniskólinn board chair Egill Jónsson told RÚV the claim amounted to tens of millions of krónur, and did not rule out that it could reach hundreds of millions. Orri declined to discuss the amount, saying the town had expected a claim because the company had incurred costs. He expects the exact figure to be known before year-end.
Orri said the case would not affect other town projects or construction work. He hopes the outcome will ultimately benefit both Hafnarfjörður and the school.
