The education minister has proposed rules that would bar smartphones from compulsory schools, KVF reports. The proposal is open for consultation until 25 November.

Under the main change, pupils would not be allowed to bring smartphones to school. They could still bring a phone without internet access, such as a basic keypad phone.

An exception is proposed for pupils who need a smartphone as an assistive tool.

The proposal is accompanied by recommendations and reports on mobile phone use and current practices in compulsory schools, as well as research on phone use and an overview of arrangements in EU countries. It also refers to a declaration on social media announced by Nordic prime ministers on 27 October.
