Rovaniemi will host a national championship-level snowmobile race on the Kemijoki River in June, Yle reports. Organiser Arto Tuisku says he expects 5,000 to 6,000 visitors.

Riders will drive their snowmobiles on the water at Sairaalanniemi and Nätynginnokka, areas near the city centre. The event, called Summer Snow Mobile Grand Prix, will be the first summer race Tuisku has organised in the city centre.

Tuisku initially sought permission to hold the summer event at Lainaanranta, where he has organised winter races. He said the permit was approved for a different location after discussions with the city that at times became heated.

Rovaniemi city technical director Pertti Onkalo said the river currents at Lainaanranta could pose safety risks for the race. The location also has a boat dock and hosts other events. He said the city welcomed summer events that could attract local people and visitors.

Summer snowmobile competitions have previously been held in Hirvas, about 20 kilometres from the city centre. Tuisku’s most recent winter race in central Rovaniemi took place in early 2026.
