Social robot Doris is being tested at Tallåsen, an elder care home in Nynäshamn, to assess how robots could support care activities, SVT reports.
Doris says she can talk with residents about memories and interests, run quizzes and take part in chair exercises, reading aloud, music and dancing. She also says she can help with bingo, but could not answer a reporter’s follow-up question about what she thinks of the game.
Innovation leader Catharina Borgenstierna said staff had to learn what timing and pace worked best when talking with the robot. Residents’ reactions have ranged from irritation to curiosity, she said.
The trial is not intended to replace staff, Borgenstierna said. Doris is being considered as one tool for offering activities that encourage stimulation, conversation and enjoyment. The team hopes to explore other uses for robots, including helping to unpack and receive deliveries.
Barbara, who lives at Tallåsen, said she has spoken with Doris in both Swedish and Polish. The robot asks in the morning whether she slept well and can tell her what food is being served, she said.
