Yle seeks workers with too little to do

Yle is asking workers to share how an economic slowdown affects their workdays, as some employees are still going to work despite having too little to do.
Finland’s economy has been subdued for a long time. It has grown recently, but less than expected. According to a survey by the Confederation of Finnish Industries, companies’ order books remain below their long-term average.
Many employers have found they do not have enough work for all their staff and have temporarily laid off employees. More than 12,000 people in Finland were on full-time temporary layoff in September.
Some employers may instead keep staff at work while waiting for conditions to improve. Yle is seeking accounts of what employees do during workdays when there is not enough work.
Responses will help Yle build background information and an overall picture of the situation. The broadcaster says it will not use anyone’s response without first contacting them, and may ask some respondents for an interview. Information will be used only for journalistic purposes, will not be shared with others and will be deleted after use.
The survey is open until November 15, 2026. Responses can also be sent directly to journalist Emilia Korpela at [email protected].
