Umbra, the Icelandic Government Offices’ service centre, and CERT-IS, the cybersecurity response team, have gained access to a specialised cybersecurity model from OpenAI, mbl.is reported.

The model is part of OpenAI’s Daybreak cybersecurity initiative. Because the technology can be used for both defence and attacks, access is granted only after an assessment through the Government Trusted Access for Cyber programme.

The agencies will examine how artificial intelligence can support cybersecurity specialists, including by reviewing code, identifying and prioritising vulnerabilities, assessing threats and responding to incidents. The model can also help find weaknesses in systems and prepare and test fixes before attackers exploit them, according to a statement from the Government Offices.

Specialists will oversee the model’s use, assess its results and make all decisions about actions. The access will allow Umbra and CERT-IS to build knowledge and experience with technology that could strengthen cybersecurity and the security of government digital services used by the public.
