The Faroe Islands parliament is due to vote today on doubling the energy subsidy for this year, with all members of its welfare committee supporting the government proposal, KVF reports.

Households will be able to apply for an additional 5,000 kroner, bringing the subsidy to 10,000 kroner this year. Some 400 households received the subsidy in the first application round.

The government expects the same number of households to apply in the second round, at a cost of two million kroner to the public treasury. The money is available from a surplus in the 2026 family allowance budget, so no supplementary appropriation is needed, the government says.

The energy subsidy scheme will expire at the turn of the year and will not be extended.

Parliament is also due to discuss a written question about the distance between students’ and apprentices’ homes and their places of instruction. Three proposals from the Self-Government Party are scheduled for their first reading.
