South Greenland businesses set priorities for Qaqortoq port
Business leaders in South Greenland have discussed what they need from a planned deep-water port in Qaqortoq, the region’s largest town. The meeting was convened by South Greenland Municipality, DR reported.
Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen said the town had outgrown its existing port, citing tourism, mining, fishing and other industries. “The new port will be a game changer,” she said.
Under an agreement from September 2025, Denmark has committed to financing the port. Funding for preliminary studies in 2027 has since been allocated.
Companies with interests in local mining projects want the port ready quickly enough to ensure limited capacity does not become a bottleneck when mining gets underway. Representatives from retail and tourism also said they wanted a larger, better-staffed port that is free of ice.
Tina Lauritsen of Greenland Travel said she hoped a new port would extend the tourist season in South Greenland. “I have a dream of year-round tourism. I would like to see that in my lifetime,” she said.
