About 20 trees have been cut down in Musan forest in Pori, in an act of suspected vandalism, Yle reports. The trees were about eight metres tall and 10 centimetres thick, and were cut roughly one metre above the ground.

Porin city forestry supervisor Päivi Ojala said the felling was not carried out by the city and that the trees had not been cut for firewood. They were left lying on the ground. “This was pure vandalism,” she said.

The trees were cut near a football field. The people responsible are not known, but the groundskeeper had earlier spotted a bow saw on a metal collection skip in a nearby car park. Ojala said someone may have picked it up and decided to saw the trees while passing the time.

Ojala warned that felling trees of this size can be dangerous, particularly if they fall on someone. She estimated the trees could have yielded one or two cubic metres of firewood, but said her main concern was that nobody had been hurt.

The bow saw was found broken beside a thicker tree that had become lodged among other trees. Ojala hopes the damage will stop now that the saw is unusable.
