Tuesday 27th October 2026 on 10:30 in Iceland

Grindavík, police, search operation

A search for the remains of Lúðvík Pétursson began at 9am on Tuesday in Grindavík, mbl.is reported. Pétursson fell into a ground fissure while working in the town in January 2024, and his family has strongly urged that his remains be recovered.

The first phase is expected to involve a visual search using rubble cameras, lighting and other equipment, without disturbing the material unnecessarily. An engineering memorandum from COWI recommended dividing the search into four phases, with the scale of the operation increasing as it progresses.

The Suðurnes police commissioner has imposed a temporary ban on drones and other remotely controlled aircraft because of the police operation at Vesturhóp 29 in Grindavík.
