Low-pressure system weakens as fronts approach Iceland

A deep low-pressure system is weakening and is expected to bring strong winds, rain and warmer air to Iceland, mbl.is reports.

Winds are forecast to pick up late Wednesday evening, with weather fronts arriving later in the night. Storm-force winds beneath Eyjafjöll and at Kjalarnes are possible, said Óli Þór Árnason, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Strong winds are expected elsewhere.

The system has appeared in long-range forecasts in recent days and is expected to arrive earlier than previously forecast. However, it is not expected to be as deep as initially anticipated. The low itself will pass far west of Greenland, leaving Iceland to experience only its fronts, for a relatively short time.

Árnason said the system could bring one or two yellow weather warnings, but its impact was looking less severe. Although the low will still be deep, its distance from Iceland means the strongest winds are not expected to reach the country.
