Kalliola Settlement Association has filed for bankruptcy at Helsinki District Court, Yle reports. Helsingin Sanomat first reported the filing.
The association said its decision followed long-running financial difficulties and a gap between its assets and liabilities. Its debts exceeded the value of its assets, and it had no source of income that could cover them, it said in a statement.
The association received about 917,000 euros in STEA grants for 2026. According to Helsingin Sanomat, it employed about 40 people in August.
Kalliola has operated in the Helsinki metropolitan area since 1919. It is Finland’s oldest settlement organisation and has organised, among other activities, volunteering and rehabilitation for people with criminal or substance-use backgrounds.
Kalliola’s adult education centre has also offered nearly 600 courses each year to about 6,000 students.
