Shareholders of Ljósleiðarinn, a data-transmission infrastructure company, have approved a mandate for steps that could change the company’s ownership, mbl.is reported. The decision is subject to confirmation by the owners of Orkuveitan, which wholly owns Ljósleiðarinn.

If confirmed, the mandate will be held by Orkuveitan’s chief executive, who represents the utility’s shares in Ljósleiðarinn. The company serves telecommunications providers, households and businesses across Iceland.

In 2023, Orkuveitan’s owners — Reykjavík, Akranes municipality and Borgarbyggð — gave temporary authorisation to increase the company’s share capital and sell new shares. The process did not result in agreements, despite investor interest, but identified opportunities in the market for Ljósleiðarinn.

The owners have been kept informed since that mandate expired. Preparing for a sale of Ljósleiðarinn is also included in the coalition agreement of Reykjavík’s majority parties, reached this spring.

Ljósleiðarinn began operating in 2007 as Gagnaveita Reykjavíkur and has built an extensive fibre-optic network serving homes and businesses.
