Orka náttúrunnar is inviting the public to an open house at Hellisheidi power plant today to mark 20 years since the facility was formally commissioned, mbl.is reports.

The event will run from 1pm to 3pm, and visitors can learn about the plant’s operations and have coffee and cake.

“For twenty years, Hellisheidi power plant has been an important foundation for quality of life and value creation in Iceland,” said Árni Hrannar Haraldsson, chief executive of Orka náttúrunnar, in a statement. He said the company is working to increase hot water production to meet future needs, a process that takes time and requires long-term planning.

Haraldsson also thanked the company’s employees, contractors and partners, past and present, for their contribution to the plant’s work supplying electricity and hot water. The plant was formally commissioned on 21 October 2006.
