Rescue crews demolish unstable barn to prevent damage

Sunday 18th October 2026 on 22:15 in Iceland

Hveragerði, rescue crews, weather damage

Rescue crews demolished an unused barn near Hveragerði after finding it was close to collapsing, mbl.is reported.

The crews were called shortly after 5pm to Stóra-Saurbær, where the roof of an old barn had started to come loose. They initially planned to use a truck fitted with a grab to hold it in place, but decided, in agreement with the resident, to bring down the building with heavy machinery after inspecting it.

Rescue teams also responded to reports of loose roof sheets elsewhere in the country. The Björg rescue team in Eyrarbakki was called out after sheets came loose and blew around nearby. The first person to report one had lain on top of it to stop it blowing farther.

The Brák rescue team in Borgarnes secured a loose roof sheet on a new building. No further damage was reported.
