Two men have received seven-year prison sentences and two others five-year sentences for their roles in the Dettifoss drug-import case, mbl.is reported. The verdict was delivered at Reykjavik District Court on Friday.
The four men were charged with an aggravated drug offence over the alleged import of 14,100 millilitres of amphetamine base, with a strength of 47 to 48 per cent, for sale in Iceland for profit.
The substance was allegedly concealed in four Absolut vodka bottles inside a bag aboard the container ship Dettifoss, which travelled from Bremerhaven, Germany, to Iceland in April.
Prosecutors alleged that Sævar Örn Hilmarsson and Kastriots Pepaj helped organise the import. Both mostly denied the charges. Magnús Gauti Magnússon and Björgvin Þór Björnsson were accused of receiving the drugs in Bremerhaven, hiding them aboard the ship and bringing them to Iceland. They admitted guilt but denied acting jointly.
