Two Kosovar prison officers in training have been charged with assaulting an inmate at Vestre Prison in Copenhagen, DR reports. Both deny the charges.

Police allege that on October 5, while working at the prison’s South Unit, the officers acted together and punched the inmate several times in the face and body.

The officers are in Denmark for six months of further training, according to the Danish Prison and Probation Service. They are being prepared to care for future Danish inmates at Gjilan Prison, which Denmark is leasing in Kosovo.

The plan is for Danish citizens convicted of offences that lead to deportation to countries outside the EU and EEA to serve their sentences in Kosovo once the prison opens. The prison has been politically controversial and repeatedly delayed.
