Seyðisfjörður’s ambulance is left exposed to the weather throughout the year, and local officials have referred a proposal to build a garage to the municipal executive council, mbl.is reported.
The town’s local committee voted on October 1 to refer the proposal, which was submitted by staff at the Eastern Health Institution. They say the ambulance is currently parked without protection.
In the proposal’s supporting document, staff warn that winter conditions could delay access to the vehicle, freeze its windows, doors and locks, and increase the risk of breakdowns. They also say patients may suffer if they have to be taken into a cold ambulance, while prolonged exposure to cold, moisture and temperature changes could affect the reliability and lifespan of its medical and emergency equipment.
The proposal’s authors say the garage has already been designed and that the need has been known for years. They say local authorities have shown support and understanding, but that the project appears to be facing obstacles at national level.
