The new section of Arnarnesvegur, between Rjúpnavegur and Breiðholtsbraut, will open to traffic at 2 p.m. on Monday, mbl.is reports.
Construction has been under way for just over three years and has caused considerable disruption to traffic. Delays are still expected while work continues.
A new roundabout at the junction of Arnarnesvegur and Rjúpnavegur, along with a nearby walking and cycling path, is still being built. About half of the roundabout has been paved, and traffic has been moved onto that section. Work is continuing on the other half, which is expected to open fully around the end of October.
Work on changes to the junction of Breiðholtsbraut and Vatnsendahvarf is also well advanced. When complete, right turns into and out of Vatnsendavegur onto Breiðholtsbraut will be allowed.
A bridge over Breiðholtsbraut opened this summer. The Arnarnesvegur project and related works are expected to be completed in November.
