Roadworks on Vejlefjord Bridge will continue throughout October and could cause queues of up to four kilometres, DR reports. The Danish Road Directorate is replacing two of the bridge’s five expansion joints.
Work on the southbound carriageway begins today. From 7 pm, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with vehicles routed onto the northbound side. The restriction will last until 5.30 am on weekdays and 7.30 am at weekends.
All lanes will be open during the day, but southbound traffic will use temporary ramps on the bridge. The speed limit in that section will be reduced to 50 kilometres per hour.
The Road Directorate expects the work to affect the morning and afternoon rush hours, particularly for southbound traffic. Queues of up to three or four kilometres could form from 7 pm and last for several hours, according to project manager Allan Højgaard Madsen.
The work will take place every day of the week. Drivers are urged to follow signs and, if possible, avoid crossing the bridge during evening work hours. Work is scheduled to start one or two hours later on weekends during the autumn holiday travel period.
Up to 100,000 vehicles cross the bridge on a typical weekday. The Road Directorate expects the work to finish on Monday, 2 November, but weather and other conditions could cause delays.
