The Kymenlaakso Wellbeing Services County has received nearly 320,000 euros in a bequest for children’s medical care, Yle reports. The money must be used for treatment and for purchasing and maintaining medical equipment.

Chief Medical Officer Tuula Rajaniemi said the county would honour the donor’s wishes, describing the bequest as significant.

The exact use of the funds has not been decided. Ville Westerlund, chief physician in paediatrics, said the newborn intensive care unit may need new care tables in the coming years. The county’s central hospital is undergoing a major renovation that includes a children’s hospital. Equipment may need updating when the children’s hospital moves to its new premises.

The children’s hospital also received a bequest worth more than 100,000 euros in 2023. Administrative Director Kalle Eklund said the county was grateful for all donations and urged donors to state clearly in their wills how they want the money to be used.
