More vehicles were scrapped in Iceland last year

A total of 8,817 vehicles were handed in for processing in Iceland last year, up from 8,006 in 2024, mbl.is reported, citing the annual report of the Úrvinnslusjóður waste-processing fund.

The total in 2023 was 8,163. More than 11,000 vehicles were handed in during some years of the past decade, while the annual figure fell below 3,000 after the financial collapse.

Passenger cars accounted for most of the vehicles processed last year, at 7,935. There were 769 vans, while considerably fewer trucks and buses were handed in.

The average age of vehicles handed in continued to rise, reaching 18.6 years last year, compared with 18.5 in 2024 and 18.3 in 2023. Trucks averaged just over 25 years old, buses around 20 years and vans 17.7 years.
