Yellow alerts warn of southeast storm in Iceland

Yellow weather alerts took effect overnight in North East Iceland, East Iceland as far as Glettingur, and the Central Highlands because of a southeast storm, mbl.is reports. The alerts are due to expire between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday. Landslide warnings are also in force.
Winds of 15 to 23 metres per second are expected in North East Iceland and East Iceland as far as Glettingur, with local gusts exceeding 35 metres per second. Travel conditions will be hazardous, especially for vehicles vulnerable to strong winds.
A southeast storm or severe gale is forecast in the Central Highlands, with winds of 20 to 25 metres per second and very strong gusts. Heavy rain is also expected south of the glaciers, bringing rising water levels. Travel is not advised.
Elsewhere, easterly winds of 15 to 23 metres per second are forecast, easing to 10 to 18 metres per second in western parts of the country, with rain in many areas. Winds will turn southerly and southeasterly at 10 to 15 metres per second today, while north-eastern areas will see 15 to 23 metres per second until noon. Rain or showers are expected, with little precipitation in the north. Temperatures will range from 8 to 15 degrees, warmest in the north.
On Friday, southerly winds of 5 to 13 metres per second and showers are expected, with little precipitation in the north-east. Temperatures will be 7 to 12 degrees, mildest in the north.
