Runners leave 15 tonnes of clothing after Copenhagen half marathon

Runners left about 15 tonnes of clothing along the route during a half marathon in Copenhagen, DR reported. The amount collected by organiser Sparta Atletik and Running was three times higher than last year.

The clothing was discarded during the World Road Running Championships, which took place in Copenhagen over the past weekend. The event also saw a world record and a European record in the half marathon.

Participants could leave their belongings in a tent for storage during the race, but many still chose to throw away jackets, hoodies and T-shirts. Runners often bring an extra top to discard before the start because they may have to wait more than an hour before entering the course.

“There were a record number of runners in Sunday’s half marathon, and we therefore also saw a record amount of clothing left behind,” said Nynne Ammundsen, who is responsible for sustainability initiatives at Sparta Atletik and Running.

The clothing will not be thrown away. Sparta Atletik and Running has set up a temporary stall outside its clubhouse, where passers-by can take the items free of charge.

“We must leave the city at least as tidy as it was when we took it over. Much of the clothing is in good condition, so it would be a shame to throw it away,” Ammundsen said.

More than half of the clothing had already been taken by the day after the stall opened.
