Man jailed for using another person’s driving licence

A man has been sentenced to two months in prison for making false accusations and traffic offences after showing police another person’s driving licence when he was stopped on Reykjanesbraut, mbl.is reports.

The incident took place on January 29, 2026, on Reykjanesbraut in Hafnarfjörður, near Ásbraut. The man was driving at 129 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone, despite having already been banned from driving. He was also under the influence of cannabis, with 10 nanograms per millilitre of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, detected in his blood.

When police stopped him, he presented a driving licence belonging to another man, indicating that the licence holder had been driving. The District Court found that he had thereby attempted to have the other man accused or convicted of offences he had committed himself.

The man did not attend the formal opening of the case, although the indictment and summons had been served on him lawfully. The case was therefore decided in his absence on the basis of the investigation materials.

He has a criminal record that includes driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and driving without a valid licence. In March 2026, he was sentenced to 60 days in prison for various offences and banned from driving for life.

Because the offences in the latest case were committed before that judgment, the court imposed a separate sentencing enhancement. The man was sentenced to two months in prison and fined 330,000 Icelandic krónur. If he fails to pay the fine within four weeks, it will be replaced by 22 days in prison. He must also pay nearly 160,000 krónur in legal costs.
