Pirates to vote on dissolving local party associations

The Pirate Party will vote on dissolving its Reykjavík and Kópavogur associations at its annual meeting on October 10, mbl.is reports. The party will also vote on dissolving inactive associations in the Northwest, Northeast, South and Reykjanes regions.

The Pirates stood in Reykjavík’s municipal elections this year but did not run in Kópavogur. The party failed to win a seat and currently has no elected representatives at either the municipal or parliamentary level.

Party chair Oktavía Hrund Guðrúnar Jóns said the proposals were part of an organisational restructuring intended to simplify the Pirates’ operations. They said the party expected to run in more than one municipality in the next municipal elections in 2030, and in every constituency in the next parliamentary elections in 2028.

“This is all connected to a new structure within the movement, which will be very exciting to present at the annual meeting,” Oktavía said.

They said the Pirates had many regional associations and no longer needed such a complex structure to carry out their work.

Olga Margrét Kristínardóttir Cilia, treasurer of the Pirates’ Reykjavík association, also said the proposal was intended to simplify the party’s operations. If approved, the work would be conducted under a single registration number.

mbl.is was unable to reach Kristin Jón Ólafsson, the list’s lead candidate, for comment. Alexandra Briem, who was in second place, declined an interview.
