Strong winds to sweep across Finland this weekend

Strong winds will affect much of Finland this weekend, with gusts exceeding 15 metres per second in many places, Yle reported, citing the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

A warning for potentially dangerous winds is in force on Saturday in several southern regions and will extend on Sunday across nearly the entire country, except the far north. On Sunday, the warning will cover southern and central Finland as far north as North Ostrobothnia and Kuusamo.

The windy conditions will begin in the south on Saturday and shift towards central Finland on Sunday. Wind and wave warnings are also in force in several sea areas.

Temperatures will remain around 15 degrees Celsius or slightly higher in southern Finland, while temperatures in the north will be closer to 10 degrees. Showers are expected in many places, becoming more widespread on Sunday.

“A clearer low-pressure system will arrive on Sunday night, bringing more continuous rainfall. Most of the rain will fall in southern Finland,” duty meteorologist Jani Sorsa of the Finnish Meteorological Institute told the Finnish News Agency STT on Friday.

The weather forecast for the beginning of next week was still relatively uncertain on Friday, but conditions are expected to become drier. Clearer and sunnier weather may also bring slightly lower temperatures, the meteorologist said.
