Longtime Venstre voter would now back Danmarksdemokraterne

Niels Martin Krag, who has voted for Venstre in every Danish parliamentary election since 1988, would now support Danmarksdemokraterne, DR reports. The dairy farmer from near Højer in Southern Jutland says Venstre has abandoned its traditional roots.

“It has always been my party, but I feel they have turned their backs on their old roots,” Krag said.

He made up his mind after Venstre voted in August for fertiliser law L5, which tightens limits on how much farmers may fertilise their fields. Krag has 450 dairy cows and around 550 hectares of land.

Venstre is currently polling at 7.1 percent in the latest Epinion survey. That is the party’s second-lowest result in polling by Epinion since it began conducting surveys for DR in 2008. Its lowest result was 6.5 percent in May 2024. Venstre received 10.1 percent of the vote in the March 2026 parliamentary election.

“I feel that the party leader, Troels Lund Poulsen, has distanced himself from agriculture. To me, it sounded as though he was trying to appeal to voters in the cities,” Krag said.

He is not the only farmer who no longer feels represented by Venstre. Jens Wistoft, a farmer and chairman of Venstre’s voters’ association in Aabenraa Municipality, said the fertiliser law had created unrest and uncertainty in rural areas. He still intends to vote for Venstre.

Venstre’s political spokesperson, Sophie Løhde, rejected the claim that the party has turned its back on agriculture.

“We are a bourgeois liberal party for Danes, whether they live in cities or in the countryside. That is what we will continue to be,” she told DR.
