Rannveig Pálsdóttir, former school treasurer, dies at 91

Rannveig Pálsdóttir, a housewife and former treasurer at Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni, has died at the age of 91, mbl.is reported.

She was the daughter of Rannveig Sigríður Bjarnadóttir, a housewife in Stóra-Sandvík, and Ari Páll Hannesson, a farmer. Her twin sisters, Sigríður Kristín and Rannveig Margrét, were born in 1930. Sigríður Kristín died in 2008, while Rannveig Margrét died in 1934.

Rannveig married Kristinn Kristmundsson in 1960. He was principal of Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni from 1970 to 2002. They had four children: Ari Páll, born in 1960, Kristrún, born in 1962, Sigurður, born in 1966, and Jónína Guðrún, born in 1968. They had 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Rannveig grew up in Stóra-Sandvík and completed her landspróf examination in Selfoss before attending the School of Domestic Science in Reykjavík. In the 1950s, she worked in pharmaceutical dispensing and at the Árnesinga Cooperative store in Selfoss.

She took courses in bookkeeping, typing and English, and worked in the school office at Menntaskólinn að Laugarvatni. For many years, she was also treasurer of the school cafeteria.

Rannveig and Kristinn worked closely together and were known for their care for students and young people, many of whom found support and shelter with the couple.

After retiring, they established the Kristinn and Rannveig Support Fund, which provides annual assistance to new graduates pursuing further studies and careers.

Rannveig was deeply involved in social and cultural affairs, particularly music, choirs and church activities. As chair of a parish committee, she worked for the extensive rebuilding and maintenance of Miðdalskirkja, a church in Laugardalur.

After Rannveig and Kristinn retired from their work at Laugarvatn in 2002, they moved to Reykjavík.
