Council demands immediate safety measures on dangerous Kambaskriður road

Fjarðabyggð municipal council is demanding immediate safety measures on the road through Kambaskriður because of repeated rockfalls and the danger they pose to road users, mbl.is reports.

The road is used for daily school transport between populated centres, while permanent improvements are not expected to be completed until after 2030.

The council expressed serious concern about the road’s condition and backed warnings issued last winter by the school council of Breiðdals- and Stöðvarfjarðarskóli about safety along the route.

“The current condition is unacceptable,” the council said in a resolution. The road plays a key role in daily transport between populated centres for work and services, including school transport.

Improvements to Kambaskriður have been included in the transport plan, but according to the current schedule, permanent construction will not be completed until after 2030. The council said it was unacceptable to wait for that work without taking preventive action in the meantime.

It called on the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and the Ministry of Infrastructure to immediately introduce temporary safety measures. These should include rockfall protection, regular monitoring and other steps to ensure the safety of road users until the permanent reconstruction is carried out.

“It is necessary to ensure that the road remains safe and usable until the planned work takes place. It is unacceptable to allow its condition to deteriorate without an appropriate response,” the resolution said.
