Border Guard investigates suspected illegal crossing in Gulf of Finland

Finland’s Border Guard is investigating a suspected illegal maritime border crossing in the eastern Gulf of Finland, Yle reports. One person is suspected of travelling by boat from Russia into Finland in the Virolahti area last Monday before returning to Russia.

Juho Sillanpää, the investigation leader at the Finnish Coast Guard, said the vessel was a small motorboat. It was on the Finnish side of the border for less than a minute, he said.

Neither the boat nor its operator has been identified.

The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard is continuing the preliminary investigation and has contacted the border commissioner for the Vyborg region.
