Tidö bloc must overturn 33,000-vote gap in Sweden’s election

Sweden’s Tidö bloc still has a chance of overturning the election result as late advance and overseas votes are counted, SVT reports. The so-called Wednesday count began on Wednesday, with up to 300,000 votes to be tallied.

The remaining votes consist of advance votes that arrived late and votes cast abroad. They will be counted on Wednesday and Thursday in 314 electoral districts across the country.

The votes counted so far give the opposition parties a lead of just over 33,000 votes. If that result holds, the opposition would secure a narrow majority in the Riksdag, with two seats.

The probability of a reversal is considered small, but it is not impossible. SVT election reporter Fouad Youcefi said that if the gap narrows substantially, every remaining vote may have to be counted before the result can be assessed.

If the gap between the blocs grows significantly during Wednesday, however, the outcome could possibly be established during the evening. A final result is not expected until Thursday.

The votes from the Wednesday count will be reported continuously throughout the day.
