Reykjavík mayor offers technical school site in Úlfarsárdal

Reykjavík Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir wants to offer Tækniskólinn, Iceland’s technical school, a site in Höllum in Úlfarsárdal after plans to build the school in Hafnarfjörður were abandoned, mbl.is reported.

Hildur said on RÚV’s Kastljós programme on Monday that the city had already reviewed possible locations and that a site in Höllum was a strong option.

“I want a new Tækniskólinn in Reykjavík. I think it is natural for it to be built here in the capital,” she said. She added that a large school and workplace would significantly strengthen the city’s upper districts.

For years, work had been under way to establish the school at Flensborgarhöfn in Hafnarfjörður. Hildur said she had learned about the change before it became public and had immediately begun examining options in Reykjavík.

She said she had previously criticised Reykjavík City for not moving quickly enough to ensure that a new Tækniskólinn would be built in the capital. She described the school as potentially becoming the flagship of industrial and technical education in Iceland, while saying that its location in Úlfarsárdal could also provide a major boost to the city’s upper districts.
