Smyril limits passengers as lifesaving equipment is upgraded

Passenger capacity on the ferry Smyril has been reduced to 500 while parts of its lifesaving equipment are upgraded, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The work concerns the vessel’s Marine Evacuation System, or MES, which is used if passengers and crew must evacuate the ship in an emergency.

Four departures have also been cancelled. They are the Wednesday sailings on September 16 and September 23 from Krambatangi at 8.45am and from Havn at 11.30am.

An MES station is an assembly and evacuation point on a ship. It enables large numbers of passengers and crew to leave quickly in an emergency by descending through a chute into large life rafts at sea.

The work is scheduled to continue until September 23.
