RVK Pizza Festival is being held for the first time at Kolaportið this weekend, with eight pizza makers offering different styles, new creations and special pizzas, mbl.is reports.
The three-day event is organised by Götubiti, also known as Reykjavík Street Food, and is aimed at anyone interested in pizza.
The participating pizza makers are from Flatey Pizza, Neo Pizza, Pizza 107, Pizza Port, Forsetinn, Íslenska flatbakan, Austurbæjarbíó and Mirko from Flatey. Together, they offer Neapolitan, Roman, New York, New Haven and sourdough-style pizzas.
Róbert Aron Magnússon, managing director of Götubiti, said the festival’s soft launch on Friday went well. He said preparations were under way to get the pizza ovens running again and fill the air with the smell of pizza.
The festival includes unusual options such as pizzas with South American influences, vodka penne pizza sauce and date salami. Mirko from Flatey is described as the only pizza maker in Iceland with pizza-making certification from Naples, allowing him to use the title “pizzaiolo”.
The event is open until 9pm on Saturday, or possibly later if attendance remains strong, and until 6pm on Sunday.
Visitors can also browse pizza-making products and equipment for home use. Pizzaofnar.is has a stall selling Ooni pizza ovens, while Tíusopar wine bar and Gaeta Gelato are offering wine and Italian gelato.
Guests can vote for their favourite pizza in an open poll on the festival’s website.
