Iceland launches data probe into referendum campaign groups

Iceland’s Data Protection Authority has opened an own-initiative investigation into the processing of personal data linked to the 29 August referendum, mbl.is reports.

The investigation covers all political parties represented in the Althingi, Iceland’s parliament, as well as the organisations Já 2026, known as SJÁ, and Áfram Ísland.

The authority said it had received a total of 54 tips and complaints about unsolicited communications and the processing of personal data in the run-up to the vote on whether Iceland should resume accession talks with the European Union.

It has forwarded cases concerning unsolicited communications and possible violations of telecommunications legislation to the Communications Authority.
