Parents should let children solve problems themselves
Family specialist Jóhann Pétur Herbertsson says many parents misunderstand their role by protecting children too much from setbacks and adversity. He made the comments on Dagmál, published by mbl.is.
“We are somewhat protecting them from traumas and adversity. In reality, it is much better for them to experience such things themselves in moderation,” Jóhann said.
He recalled a story about a mother who did not help her son when it was clear that he was facing trouble.
“I really ought to give her some kind of medal,” Jóhann said, referring to the mother’s decision to let her son deal with the situation himself.
He also said that many parents neglect to prepare their children for life. In one example, a boy was expected to look after his own football equipment.
