Kristersson and Andersson clash as election pressure intensifies

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson exchanged sharp remarks during a televised debate, according to an analysis published by SVT. With only a few days left until the election, both leaders are under heavy pressure and control of the government is at stake.

Despite the tense tone, much of the debate focused on policy issues, including household finances, nuclear power, elderly care and the sick-pay qualifying deduction.

The sharpest exchange concerned the abolition of the volume discount in sentencing. Kristersson accused the Social Democrats of opposing the change, while Andersson denied the claim.

Parliament voted in August to approve the government’s proposal to abolish the volume discount. The Social Democrats voted against it, calling the proposal unserious. At the same time, the party says it supports abolishing the discount for certain serious crimes, including sexual offences.

The Tidö parties hope the dispute will attract potential voters considering switching from the red-green side. According to an SVT/Verian survey, law and order is the issue on which these potential switchers believe the Tidö parties have the strongest policies.

The debate was particularly important for the Social Democrats and the Moderates as the election campaign enters its final stretch. Opinion polls indicate that the election could be close, with the gap between the blocs narrowing and undecided voters still open to persuasion.

According to SVT’s 2022 exit poll, 36 per cent of voters decided which party to support during the final week of the campaign.
