Molslinjen cuts ferry fares after criticism

Molslinjen has lowered fares for foot passengers travelling between Aarhus and Sjællands Odde after criticism and talks with authorities, DR reports. Prices will now start at 89 kroner.

Carsten Borup had reduced his trips to his family’s summer house in Sjællands Odde because he considered the journey from Aarhus to northwestern Zealand too expensive.

“I am really pleased, because it means I no longer have to think about the cost when I travel back and forth to the summer house,” Borup said.

Fares for foot passengers had doubled to 299 kroner, prompting criticism from Borup and Thomas Adelskov, a former mayor of Odsherred Municipality and a member of the regional council of Region East Denmark.

Molslinjen previously said the price increases were caused by a new method of calculating VAT on ferry tickets, resulting in an additional bill of several million kroner that was passed on to foot passengers.

Following discussions with the authorities, the ferry operator has changed the way tickets are sold. It previously sold a car ticket first, but will now sell a passenger ticket first, said Jesper Maack, the company’s head of press and communications. This means VAT is calculated differently and can result in a different fare for foot passengers.

Borup, who is 75 and receives a state pension, plans to travel from Beder, south of Aarhus, to Sjællands Odde again.

“I have really had to weigh up the cost,” he said.
