Police open preliminary investigation into Olivia Oras’s death

Helsinki Police have opened a preliminary investigation into the death of social media influencer Olivia Oras, Yle’s investigative programme MOT reported. Police are investigating the case under the criminal classification of aggravated negligent homicide.

Police said they received a request for an investigation concerning the death on Sunday. MOT reported on Monday evening that people close to Oras had filed the request, a detail confirmed to the programme by her parents, Reijo Oras and Johanna Oras.

Oras died on September 3. Her parents previously told MOT that the request concerned a private clinic in Helsinki, which they believe was responsible for their daughter’s death.

According to information obtained by MOT from two independent sources, Oras lost consciousness during anaesthesia before undergoing liposuction at a beauty clinic in Helsinki. She was taken to the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, known as HUS, where she later died.

The sources did not know whether a treatment error had occurred or whether the death resulted from another cause. Oras’s parents confirmed that she lost consciousness during anaesthesia before an aesthetic procedure and died after receiving hospital care. They said HUS had done everything possible to save her life.

Oras, 27, became widely known after appearing in the 2017 documentary film The Perfect Selfie, which followed her life as a social media influencer and the pressures it brought. In 2024, she told the magazine Me Naiset that she had struggled with substance abuse and an eating disorder.

Her father, Reijo Oras, is an art dealer, and her mother, Johanna Oras, is an artist.
