Audit finds gaps in Sweden’s handling of security threats

Sweden’s National Audit Office has identified shortcomings in how the Migration Agency and Security Service handle foreign nationals who may pose threats to national security, SVT reports.

The review examined how potential threats are identified, investigated and addressed. While the process largely works well, the audit found that the Migration Agency sometimes misses signs of a security threat. This creates a risk that people who may pose a threat could receive residence permits or Swedish citizenship.

The audit also identified a serious shortcoming in the Security Service’s work: it does not systematically assess how accurate its threat evaluations are. The National Audit Office also highlighted long processing times and deportation decisions that cannot be enforced.
