Man survives Kangasniemi shooting; homicide not suspected

A relatively young man survived a life-threatening gunshot wound in Kangasniemi on Saturday, Yle reported. Police do not suspect an attempted homicide.

The man was shot in the upper body at a private residence in the town of Kangasniemi, where several people had gathered for the evening.

According to Jyrki Kuivisto, a detective chief inspector with the Eastern Finland Police Department, the victim and the person who fired the weapon know each other well. The main sequence of events is clear, he said.

Police suspect alcohol played a role in what happened. Several people were detained at the scene, and officers are investigating their involvement.

The case is currently being investigated as an aggravated firearms offence and aggravated causing of bodily injury. Police also carried out tactical and technical investigations at the residence and seized the firearm that caused the injuries.
