Iceland opens first purpose-built women’s shelter

Iceland’s first women’s shelter built specifically for that purpose has opened in Reykjavík after years of preparation, mbl.is reports.

The new shelter was designed around the needs of women and children fleeing their homes because of violence. It also offers improved facilities for welcoming women and children with disabilities.

Residents and children will move into the new shelter later this month.

The formal opening took place yesterday. Guests included Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir, Social Affairs Minister Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson and Reykjavík Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir. Women involved in opening Iceland’s first women’s shelter in 1982 also attended.

“Their initiative is a valuable reminder of what women’s solidarity and courage can achieve,” the Association for Women’s Shelters said in a statement.

The association said public support had been crucial to developing the new shelter. Monthly contributions from Friends of the Shelter have grown and now cover about half of the shelter’s operating income.

“It is above all public support that ensures we can continually develop and improve the services provided to women and children,” the statement said.
