SVT launches local election compass for Sweden’s 2026 vote

Swedish public broadcaster SVT has launched a local election compass showing how political parties position themselves on more than 1,000 specific issues in municipalities and regions across Sweden.

The tool allows users to see what politicians think in their municipality or region. At launch, it contains 1,111 questions identified as locally important to specific municipalities or regions.

SVT sent local election questions to more than 2,400 local parties in the country’s 290 municipalities and 21 regions.

A team of eight researchers at SVT identified key local issues in cooperation with the broadcaster’s local newsrooms, external media organisations and political scientists.

In addition to SVT’s own platforms, 134 other media websites across Sweden will publish the local election compasses.

SVT has also published an election glossary explaining terms including electoral register, polling official, preferential voting, coalition, election manifesto, constituency, mandate and opposition.
